In a statement issued on Tuesday, March 3, York President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda Lenton announced the appointment will take effect on July 1, 2020.

Zwick has been a faculty member at Schulich since 2002. He is also a faculty member of the Communication and Culture Graduate Program.

Since 2018, Zwick has served as associate dean academic at Schulich. Some of his responsibilities included program development, academic policy, student services and international relations. Zwick declined to comment at this time.

“I am very grateful for Professor Zwick’s willingness to undertake this important responsibility. I know that he will provide outstanding leadership as interim dean, and I look forward to working with him and colleagues in the Schulich School to continue to advance the school’s reputation,” says Lenton in her statement.

“The school has sent us many emails to notify us about this change, ensuring that it will run smoothly and is in the best interest of us as students. I do not think otherwise and I am overall looking forward to this change,” says second-year Schulich student Cassandra Iafrate.

The incumbent dean and Chair of Strategic Management at Schulich, Dr. Dezsö J. Horváth has been a York faculty member since 1977. He has served as the dean since 1988.

“I look forward in the coming months to recognizing and celebrating with you Dean Horváth’s extraordinary contributions to the Schulich School and York University over the past 30 years,” says Lenton.

“Our current dean has devoted a lot of time and energy into making Schulich an environment where students are encouraged to learn, succeed and rise above challenges. This being said the new dean has big shoes to fill in hopes that Schulich will continue to be the reputable school it has proved itself to be,” adds Iafrate.

Appointing a new dean at York is a 12-step procedure. The president must initiate a search by communicating with faculty 14 months prior to the end of the incumbent dean’s term.

In the case of an unexpected vacancy, the president must initiate this process immediately.

Faculty councils and search committees must be appointed. The search committee will then undergo interviews with prospective candidates.

Finally, the president will consult with the Executive Committee of the Board of Governors to appoint a candidate and announce the name of the new Dean or Principal to the York community.

The search for Dean Horváth’s permanent successor is still ongoing. The duration of Zwick’s time as dean has yet to be confirmed.
