Seneca@York students are concerned they may not be getting every York security bulletin for the Keele campus.

Seneca@York’s location on Keele campus means that incidents occurring at York impact Seneca students, although due to their concentrated building allocation, many incidents reported in bulletins may actually have little relevance to Seneca students.

Emily Milic of Seneca media relations says security news are posted on Seneca’s intranet for York updates. Milic explains that bulletins are posted on a case-by-case basis, based on the impact to the Seneca@York campus.

Excalibur asked students what they thought of potential exclusion of Seneca students at York for security updates.

York sociology graduate Anthony Gabrielli says he is not surprised.

Gabrielli says students receive emails about incidents that were far from their classes, and because Seneca at York takes up only a small space at York, it is irrelevant to send all York updates to Seneca students.

Dawn Jeffery, Seneca@York alumna, says she never thought about the lack of security bulletins as an issue. “It’s kind of a problem finding out weeks later from the radio that I was unknowingly putting myself in danger. I don’t get any info about that from security or the school,” she adds.

Any incidents that are considered security threats to York are reported to York students through security updates via email. Yet it is unclear whether Seneca students who are on campus receive these updates as well.

Seneca is within the jurisdiction of York’s campus, making security updates relevant to both institutions. York students receive emailed bulletins automatically when a serious incident has occured on campus and there is a risk of recurrence.

Barbara Joy of York media says security bulletins are sent to Campus Security at Seneca and that York’s security staff follow up with them on any safety issues that are of joint concern.

“Any direct communications with Seneca students about safety concerns are managed by the administration at Seneca,” adds Joy.
