Robert Cerjanec, a York alumnus and former York Federation of Students’ vp operations, is currently running for a Toronto District School Board trustee position for Ward 17 – Don Valley East.
Cerjanec graduated from York with a bachelor of arts in political science in 2012. He is a 25-year resident of the Don Valley East riding, and has been closely involved with the community.
This is the second time Cerjanec is running for the position, having come in second in the last byelections.
“We need to build the strongest public school system for our future, and we need to look at what our needs are as a school system,” says Cerjanec. “It’s about making sure the community’s needs are heard and are actually listened to by the local trustee.”
Cerjanec intends to focus on opposing cuts and sell-offs of schools and school lands, and an expansion of nutrition programs at the TDSB.
“A lot of kids in our public education system right now go without breakfast and in some cases, even lunch,” he adds.
“As a school board, we need to be focused on making sure we can provide some of those basic needs for our children.”
During his time at York, aside from being YFS’s vp operations, Cerjanec was treasurer and a board member of the Student Centre Corporation, president of the Founders College Student Council, and staff liaison and treasurer at CHRY Community Radio.
Cerjanec is currently employed as the operations manager for the Student Association of George Brown College.
