Students Against Israeli Apartheid are attempting to regain their official club status after having it revoked by the York administration in March 2013.
Between January 6 and 19 of this year, clubs who have had their status revoked can submit to a process of reinstatement through the office of the Student Community and Leadership Development.
Under a contract called the Statement of Rights and Responsibilities, clubs are required to attend a “Clubs 101” session, and sign a standard contract that affirms commitment to abide by York’s policies, procedures and regulations.
Typically, it takes five to seven days for SCLD to review the submission.
Dan O’Hara, a member of SAIA, says he’s confident the club will get its status back. He maintains that the revocation of SAIA’s club status was unfair, saying there was no investigation into the administration’s decision.
“This term, we’ll be letting students know about our plan for divestment, as well as raising awareness about the administration’s abuse of power and fighting against it,” says O’Hara.
SAIA’s status was revoked last year for alleged disruption of academic activity following a rally in Vari Hall on March 27.
