York’s current Board of Governors does not accurately represent the diversity of the York community, says Emile Wickham, the undergraduate student representative on the Board.
“The racial composition of the board tends to be one dominant group,” says Wickham, noting that there are only two black males on the board, including himself. Currently, the majority of the Board consists of white males.
There are currently 32 members that sit on the Board and serve on seven different committees. These are committees on academic resources, executive, finance and audit, governance and human resources, investment, land and property, marketing, communications and community affairs.
Out of these 32 members on the Board, only two are student representatives, one elected by graduate students and the other by undergraduates.
Harriet Lewis, university secretary and general counsel, says York tries to have members on the Board who reflect the community they serve and the needs of the university at that period of time.
“Sometimes, we have a lot of people from different ethnic backgrounds, and sometimes, we have fewer because the terms are fairly long and people’s circumstances change, and they may leave,” says Lewis. “And then we have to find someone who closely sits with what the needs are and at the same time we always try to keep a mix of diversity on the Board.”
Members of the the Board, which is self-appointed, suggest new members they believe would be an adequate fit, and those chosen are nominated and voted on by the current members.
“The governors themselves are all volunteers and serve as influencers,” says Lewis. “We get several names suggested, and we get information about them, see what competencies we need at any time, and if people are available.”
Currently, the selection process for the appointment of new members is under review and will be updated to fulfill the requirements of the Board.
