York has purchased three new security vehicles for Keele and Glendon campus. The new vehicles were bought as part of York security’s equipment replacement plan.
The process, Joanne Rider of York media explains, is one that takes place approximately once every five years. Whether or not equipment needs to be upgraded or replaced is determined during this evaluation, and the time has come to replace the old vehicles.
“The two Dodge Chargers were $31,000 each, and the Chevy Tahoe was $40,000,” says Rider. “This comes from the part of the operating budget, and the department indicates what needs to be replaced.”
Students are confused as to why the money is being spent. Andrew Roach wonders if hiring more people instead was an option.
“I question why they would spend money on that as opposed to actually hiring more people,” he says. “What can you really do in a car? I would say that they should reach out to students for what we want. We’re the ones walking around campus late at night, and we would know what would actually help, and it’s not a Dodge Charger.”
