Along with Flavor Flav, Simon Cowell, and Stephen Harper, York University is turning 53 with a fabulous birthday celebration and is inviting students, faculty, and staff to show school pride March 26.
“What better way than to celebrate the spirit of Red and White on York’s 53rd birthday itself?” says Sara Gedara, student relations director of York. “Students and faculty all over, whether its commuters, part-time, or full-time, ought to participate in something. Engage with the community and have an opportunity to experience student life outside the classroom.”
There will be a Red and White Day Prize Patrol at Keele campus, and you can win a prize if you are seen wearing red, white, or York University gear. The Bookstore will be selling York T-shirts for $10.
Certain campus shops and restaurants will have special discounts, and the Bookstore will be offering 15-per-cent discounts.
From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, there will be free cupcakes and cake given out at Vari Hall, the East Bear Pit, the Student Centre, and Glendon campus. There will also be face painting, henna tattoos, and button making celebrations in Vari Hall.
“We are a university with a spirit that is second to none,” says president Mamdouh Shoukri. “I wish York a happy 53rd birthday, and I look forward to seeing everyone at our celebrations on March 26 wearing their red, white, and York gear.”
From 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., students can take pictures with the mascots in the photo booth located in Vari Hall. There will be a cake-cutting ceremony from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. with president Shoukri in the Student Centre and Glendon Dining Hall, followed by stage performances including dancers and singers from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m.
