Toronto police are currently investigating a shooting at York University’s Keele campus.

According to Detective Bevilacqua of 31 Division and York security, an unknown suspect fired a shotgun at an apartment door located at 360 Assiniboine Rd around 6:44 a.m. on February 18.

“Around 6 in the morning there was a shooting [from] an individual who fired a shotgun to the door,” says York security, who are currently helping with the investigation.

Only one female tenant was in the apartment at the time of the shooting. Though at least one shotgun pellet went through the apartment door, she was unharmed.

There were several security cameras at the location; however, Detective Bevilacqua says the cameras “don’t show anything,” and that there were no witnesses of the shooting.

“We are relieved no one is hurt. We can confirm that the shooting took place around 7 a.m. and please contact the Toronto police for more information,” said Wallace Pidgeon, associate director of media relations at York, via email.

Abhay Rai, and a grad student at York who has been living in the apartment for close to two years, says this is the first time anything like this has happened. He notes that the apartment is a place where many York students live, and are the only ones able to rent rooms.

The investigation is still ongoing.

If you have any information about this incident, please contact Toronto Police Service directly at 416.808.2222 or York Security at 416.736.5333.
