The Student Centre was awash with proud chants that teetered on friendly rivalry among the numerous cultural student groups on campus on the morning of January 13.
Over 30 different cultural groups at York donned their traditional outfits and draped themselves in small and large flags, some flanked by intricately designed floats, and paraded from the Student Centre to the Curtis Lecture Halls and then to Vari Hall, while staff and students looked on.
The group headed back to the Student Centre where they beat drums and broke out into dance and song. With over 300 students participating in the parade—and even more participating in the numerous other events planned up until February 17—the festivities encouraged and enticed York to come watch performances and engage in cultural discussion.
Many students even had a chance to get a literal taste of different cultures at The Underground February 14, where students were offered traditional dishes at low prices.
