Talks surrounding the future fate of the York University Student Centre (YUSC) continue as different parties meet to discuss what will happen with the space.

According to Vanessa Hunt, president of the York Federation of Students (YFS), the YFS and York administration have been working together throughout the semester, meeting with members such as Gary Brewer, vp finance and administration.

“Right now we’re narrowing things down in terms of what we want the space to be,” says Hunt, explaining the focus has been on a lack of student space, an initiative the YFS has been working on for a number of years.

Hunt points out that York campus lacks computer labs, lounge places, and prayer spaces.

“The biggest question [right now] is where we will expand?” questions Hunt. The current debate, she says, is about whether the Student Centre should be expanded upwards or if the expansion should move to another location entirely.

Hunt also explains the focus on the direction of the Student Centre is based upon accommodating the growing university population, which has surged in the last few years and caused a significant lack of space on campus.

Nevertheless, Hunt says the next step is to organize a referendum to collect fees for the Student Centre, but that students should not expect any substantial changes to the Student Centre this year since it is still in the process of discussion.
