Glendon paper back in circulation

Pro Tem newspaper to hit the stands this November

After a year on hold, Glendon’s student paper is making a comeback.

First founded in 1962, Glendon College’s newspaper Pro Tem remains Ontario’s only bilingual student newspaper and York’s oldest student-run publication.

Unfortunately, Pro Tem did not publish during the 2009-2010 academic school year due to administrative issues and unavailable files crucial to publication. These problems, however, have since been addressed.

In case anyone thinks the Glendon paper suffered from a lack of student interest or participation, Glendon’s manager of student affairs Aaron Doupe assures this was not the case.

“There has never been lack of student interest or participation,” he says. “In fact, after the year hiatus, students are even more interested in getting involved with Pro Tem.”

Doupe says the senior editorial team was “flooded” with applications for available positions with the paper. In order to improve their online presence, Pro Tem has launched social media outlets for further interaction.

Despite the enthusiasm, Pro Tem has some challenges to overcome in the upcoming year.

“I think Pro Tem’s greatest challenge will be rebuilding and training a full editorial, creative and administrative team—a team that will largely be first-time Pro Tem members,” says Doupe. “I’m happy to report that the new group is making great progress and has filled all positions.”

Fourth-year student Cheryl Kane was hired as editor-in-chief. Five students applied for the position after a campus-wide call.

Pro Tem plans to differentiate itself from other campus newspapers, aside from the French writing.

“Many Glendon students returning from exchange [programs] are contributing to the paper this year, adding an interesting new perspective,” he says.

The next major task, he says, is to launch the year’s first issue. It is due to hit stands November 21.
