TTC Information Centre opens a year behind schedule

Almost a year after it was promised by the YUDC, the highly anticipated TTC Information Centre in York Lanes has opened to answer student questions about the upcoming subway, due to finish 2015.

The information centre for the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension (TYSSE) did open as promised, but only on September 14, 2011; almost a year after the York University Development Corporation (YUDC) said it would.

“We clearly were of the opinion that it was going to be opening last year and it got opened this year,” says YUDC president Bud Purves on the information centre.

When asked whether the delay came as a result of miscommunication between the YUDC and the TTC, Purves replies: “that would have come from the TTC. So I just can’t account for it.”

The TTC, however, sees no delay. As far as they are concerned, the TYSSE Info Centre was opened according to schedule.

“Our project never stated we were going to open [the information centre] a year ago, ever,” says Debbie Cole-Gauer, TTC community relations coordinator. “There was something mentioned at York about it opening, but it wasn’t from us. Our first email on the project information centre went out last week.”

Nevertheless, Cole-Gauer hopes the information centre will provide assistance to those who wish to know more about the coming subway as major changes continue to role out on campus.

“We hope that the subway project can be more relevant to all the students and staff at York,” she says. “We see it as a transformative project.”
