Glendon campus saw many changes in the newly renovated cafeteria for hungry commuters and residence students, who can now enjoy new food options in a more spacious environment.
According to director of food services Anthony Barbisan, the renovated “Eat Smart!” – certified cafeteria in York Hall cost about $1.3 million to renovate, with a focus on a marché style of food preparation where meals are finished and served in front of the customer to maintain freshness and quality.
“[The costs] included an all-new servery, new and more efficient kitchen equipment, and significant upgrades to the cafeteria’s gas, electrical, and plumbing infrastructure,” says Barbisan.
While some food prices have gone up, others have dropped or remained the same.
“We consult with students on a regular basis to fine-tune what we offer,” says Barbisan.
He says the renovation has allowed room to focus on fresh and healthy foods. He is quick to point out the fresh ingredients used in the homemade foods.
“For example, the soup station offers a meat, vegetarian, and vegan selection every day that are each made from scratch,” says Barbisan. “The new and larger salad bar […] will offer a variety of fresh and healthy options like homemade hummus and fresh herbs.”
Student reactions to the renovations are mixed; second-year psychology major Victoria Mackenzie feels the cafeteria is more aesthetically pleasing, but also less convenient and comfortable.
“If there were more choices, how should I know? There’s no menus posted anymore,” she points out. “It’s definitely more visually appealing […] but the cherry on top is the cafetorium. I only have one thing to say about it: I hate the chairs.”
Second-year English major Samantha Brecknock loves the makeover.
“There’s much more space and I like how we moved the cashiers outside into the dining area so that the lines don’t take up as much space,” she says. “I have to say the strawberry banana is my favourite so far from our new smoothie section! I’m really pleased with how the renovation turned out.”
