Study aims to target obesity in young women from an early age
An ongoing study is analyzing how fat burns in young girls and women aged eight to 18 and hoping to identify the potential health risks associated with it.
York University associate professor of kinesiology and health science Dr. Michael Riddell and graduate student Lisa Chu will contribute to the study, which is part of a larger piece of work conducted at the Hospital for Sick Children called HISTORY (High Impact Strategies Towards Overweight Reduction in Youth).
While past research has focused, and been conducted on, adults, Riddell and Chu are studying whether certain factors in puberty can contribute to how fat burns in young women.
The study included two sessions where girls pedal on a stationary bike and their blood pressure measurements are taken, each session lasting about eight to 10 minutes in length.
“The study looks at breath-by-breath measurements according to a standard protocol,” said Chu. “The second test is a different protocol, and is looking at the use of fuel during
exercising.”
At the end of each session, the subjects are provided with a heart-rate range and given examples of exercises that best match their profile.
“We are looking at an optimal intensity that girls can exercise at to optimize the ability to burn fat,” said Chu. “Obesity itself is very complex and there are a lot of issues associated with it.”

YorkU leads the way in fair-trade campus wear
YorkU is  ramping up the number of fair-trade products on campus by introducing fair-trade shirts, the first campus in Canada to offer them at a university
bookstore.
In partnership with three professors from the business and society program (BUSO), York University has dealt with Wearfair – an organization whose production process is fair-trade certified before distribution – to supply the shirts.
After meeting by chance, York Bookstore director Steve Glassman and Wearfair manager Bill Barrett began the year-and-a-half process to bring the reasonably priced, fair-trade shirts to campus.
Glassman said universities need to build a community to support products from the fair labor association, and that York is currently doing its part.
“In the past, farmers haven’t had enough money to even buy seeds. But with fair-trade, you are ensured that the farmers are given a good price, which means the middle-man is getting less,” said Glassman. “Our little order at York made a difference. It was a significant order for the workers and ultimately [for] the farmers in India.”

Exams moved to Rexall
In a move designed to avoid the surge of intentional exam disruptions at York University’s Keele campus – false fire alarms, bomb threats and the like – the registrar’s office relocated several exams to the Rexall Centre’s Centre of Excellence during the school’s Dec. 2010 fall exams.

While the administration initially planned to eventually move all exams to the new location, they’ve found it’s simply impossible to rent that much space. However, thanks to the success of last term’s pilot, many more exams will be shifted to the Rexall Centre for this winter exam period.
According to Joanne Duklas, assistant v-p of enrolment management and university registrar, a major shift would require a drastic change in course structures and possibly damage academic worth.
“We still have to learn and try the experience for the in-term tests and exams,” she said. “This is a community learning approach. [We have to] make sure it’s comfortable for everybody, including community
stakeholders.”
