In a March 22 letter to the York community, president Mamdouh Shoukri noted the Community Safety Council will be consulting with students on whether security’s use of force model should be revised.
Consultation will begin in fall 2011, and will include education awareness.
The letter outlined several initiatives the university had taken based on the York safety audit, completed in June 2010 by the Metropolitan Action Committee on Violence Against Women and Children (METRAC).
The letter also stated the university is working on a mass notification method, where a campus-wide Public Address (PA) system would be phased into all buildings at both Keele and Glendon campus.
Shoukri also made official the decision to reject METRAC’s recommendation a women’s studies or equity studies course be mandatory. He noted the Senate Committee on Academic Standards, Curriculum and Pedagogy deemed the move “neither feasible nor pedagogically sound.”
Students are encouraged to visit the safety audit website for more information on METRAC’s recommendations at www.yorku.ca/safety/.
