Since graduating from Ryerson University’s broadcast journalism program in 1986, Keith Marnoch has kept himself busy.
“I worked as a news reporter in mid-western Ontario,” he reminisced. “Since then, I’ve worked at Tennis Canada as communications manager. I then went over and worked at The Sports Network (TSN) as a communications person, and went to work for the Globe and Mail website.”
That job was followed by another one at the Globe and Mail, followed by another at Queen’s Park, as well as in Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga.
The list is indeed exhausting.
“I’ve had a consistent string of doing communication and PR type work within pretty high profile places in Canadian brands and so on, and this has been my latest venture,” he said. “I’ve been rather versatile and don’t have a distinct need to work in a certain sector.”
Though he said he finds it hard to leave, as with any other job, Marnoch hopes that his time here has tested him well and prepared him for the position of director of media and community relations at the University of Western Ontario.
“I’ve never taken a job I haven’t loved,” he said. “On the surface, people tell me that I’ve got a tough job, but I love it. It’s so intense, there’s so much to it. I love being tested, knowing what I can and can’t do, knowing what I need to develop.”
Marnoch admitted there have been trying times, but said that ultimately, his experience at York University proved to be a privilege.
“There have been tough days and you shake your head, but then you realize the big picture. All the stuff you had the opportunity to do, it’s a privilege. I’m really looking forward to extending everything that I’ve learned here.”
