Parking relief

A temporary parking lot will replace the soon-to-close parking spaces located near Northwest Gate in anticipation of the construction taking place there to extend the subway system.
The lot will provide approximately 140 parking spaces along the Northwest Gate; it will employ the current pay-and-display method.
According to a press release by the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), the temporary parking space should be completed by March, though unforeseeable weather could create delays.
“There was a bit of a delay in finalizing the contacts with the contractors,” said Keith Marnoch, associate director of York media relations. “But we are moving ahead with the plan.”
Although Marnoch insisted there would be minimal impact on students, he also said employees who regularly use the spots might be displaced.
“Those who regularly use the Northwest Gate may have to find some other spaces around campus,” he said, adding that he does not think that bus routes near the area will be affected.
Though there will be a slight shift in the number of available parking spaces, Marnoch also maintained that overall availability would not be affected, and that parking costs will remain stagnant.
The Northwest Gate site will act as the drop point where a set of two tunnel-boring machines – either Yorkie and Torkie or Holey and Moley, names given to the drills following a public TTC naming contest – will be lowered into the ground.
The Northwest Gate parking lot will be used until the construction of the temporary lot is completed.
