The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) held an open house in Vari Hall Oct. 7 to present the York University community with the final blueprint for the future subway station, coming to the Keele campus in 2015.
When asked how she felt the open house went, Carolyn Embury, the communication specialist and spokesperson for the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension (TYSSE), said she felt it was a great success.
“We appreciate everybody taking the time to stop in to look at the display boards and the model. We’re really happy with people’s interaction with our staff and we just were very pleased that people took such interest,” said Embury.
According to Embury, the TTC plans to keep York’s community informed as this project continues to unfold.
She said that closer to the start of station construction, the TTC will send out notices to advise everyone of the activities.
Up-to-date information will also be available at a display station set up in York Lanes.
According to Bud Purves, president of the York University Development Corporation (YUDC), the TTC will rent the former Taco Villa restaurant space and erect an information centre where students can find out about “when the construction starts, and find out more about road closures.”
In addition, the TTC is holding a two-part contest to name the two sets of tunnel boring machines that will be used dig the channels for the TYSSE project.
The first half of the contest, held in September, involved sending in a pair of names for the tunnel boring machines, and saw the submission of over seven hundred entries.
A panel of judges narrowed these entries down to ten, and opened to the public the second part: voting on the final names.
Finalists for the naming contest include Bitsy and Bory; Yorkie and Torkie; Tweedledig and Tweedledug; Holey and Moley; and Huff and Puff.
People have until Oct. 22 to visit www.toronto.ca/tbmcontest and choose a name for the boring machines.
