On Aug. 9, 2010, a car accident took the life of Sylvia Maka, a third-year student with the faculty of health at York, and two of her cousins.

Maka, who was enroled in a double major, psychology and communication studies, was 19 years old at the time of her death.

The accident took place while Maka was visiting her family in Poland.

The university’s Canadian flag was lowered half-mast Sept. 21 and will fly there until Sept. 22 at 1 p.m. to commemorate Maka’s life. She leaves behind friends and family in Canada, the United States and Poland.

Condolences for Maka and her family can be posted and read online at the Courtice Funeral Chapel.

There has been a trust fund set up for Maka’s family at St. Stanislaus-St. Casimir’s Polish Parishes Credit Union Ltd.
