Toronto was transformed that weekend, albeit for just a couple days, into a different place, one that will forever loom in the shadow of the city’s history. Plastered on the TVs and in the newspapers of every news outlet across the globe were images of a Toronto never seen before.
The acts of violence and destruction were, simply put, a humiliating and disgraceful showcase of our city. That said, I decided it wasn’t the violence sensationalized in over-the-top TV edits of burning cop cars in the Toronto streets that I felt needed attention.
It is easy to take a negative eye to what happened that one weekend in Toronto, but I decided early on that my aim would be to capture the lighter side of the events that took leaders from all corners of the world and placed them in downtown Toronto. The weekend was driven by tens of thousands of passionate protestors. Many marched the streets for hours on end, until their voice fell to whimpers or their feet gave out, yet so little media attention was given to them, due to a few that got rowdy.
While glossing over the acts of outraged protestors was not my goal, I did want to give insight into how the other 99.99 percent of the protestors spent their weekend, to give the audience a perspective different from the slim range of narratives that they had seen via other media outlets.
