My search for the perfect BLT

As someone who can’t eat eggs, my fast-food breakfast of choice has always been a BLT (bacon, lettuce and tomato) sandwich.

When I worked the 6 a.m. shifts at McDonald’s in high school before the McMuffin era, combo number six was my introduction to a professionally made BLT.

I’ve had the same problem on campus: an otherwise good sandwich ends up being just less than delicious because of wilted lettuce, over-crisped bacon or too much tomato. One store, which shall remain unnamed, even dumped salt and pepper on my precious BLT, after I had asked them twice to hold the shakers.

I’ve thus compiled my four years of on-campus BLT-consuming experience here so that you, dear reader, will never have to go through the same dining disappointments I did. First, let me tell you about the establishments you might expect have a BLT on their menu, but don’t: Cafe? Supreme, Central Square Cafe?, Complex 1 or Complex 2, Country Style Kosher Cafe?, Las Nubes Cafe?, Mangia Mangia Mangia, Michelangelo’s, Second Cup and the TEL Cafe? are all
BLT-less. However, Second Cup will point you to Berries and Blooms for a great BLT and Wendy’s does have a BLT Cobb Salad (alas, it contains chopped eggs).
And the TEL Cafe? and Central Square, to be fair, do offer a BLT Pita at Pita Pit. When you think about it, though, Pita Pit gives you unlimited veggies anyways, so why would you pay so much for bacon and a pita? Pita Pit has so many other options that would be more worth your money.

Finally, the Absinthe Pub and Grad Lounge both sell BLT sandwiches that I haven’t tried before, so feel free to go explore on your own!

The chart below ranks on-campus BLTs on a 10-point scale, but, in short, Treats is the place to be for a BLT. The bagel is chewy on the outside but warm and toasted on the inside. The lettuce is always fresh and well-chopped. Their tomatoes don’t leak and their bacon is open-grilled, not flat-ironed or microwaved.

Service is quick, even when they’re busy, and your wallet won’t hate you for your poor choices. They even serve it to you on a little plate (even if you ordered your BLT to go); just make sure to roll-wrap the bag closed so that your sandwich doesn’t get cold as you wait for the bus or walk across campus.

You are now prepared to find the BLT of your dreams on campus. Good luck; I wish you many happy (and eggless) breakfasts!
