The Lions roar past the Windsor Lancers

(Shawn Commey)

The Lions’ men’s soccer team kicked off their doubleheader against the Windsor Lancers with a dominant 5-0 victory last Friday. This is coming after their first loss of the season to the Algoma Thunderbirds a week prior. The Lions’ landslide victory featured braces from both Luca Accettola and Justin Cicchilo, with Yigal Bruk securing the third goal in the 37th minute.

Lions’ Head Coach Carmine Issacco says that the loss against Algoma was an eyeopener, stating, “Sometimes you gotta take a step back to take a step forward.”

Issacco also suggested it might be tougher on the road, but that was not the case as the Lions got 6 goals past the Lancers on Sunday in the second game of the double header, courtesy of a brace by in-form Christian Zeppieri, and goals by Yigal Bruk, Luca Accettola, and Ryan Robinson. The Lions still maintain their position at the head of the table in the OUA West.

The women’s soccer team were on the other side of the broom, as they got swept by the Lancers 3-1 and 1-0, respectively, in last week’s double header. However, Nia Fleming-Thompson added to her goal tally on Friday’s game, making a case for MVP this year.

Looking ahead, the Lions head to London, Ontario to face the Western Mustangs on Oct. 11. After a tough loss, the women’s team hope to bounce back and show their resilience, as they take on one of the strongest teams in the league. Meanwhile, the men continue their fierce run of games. We wish them the best of luck as both teams aim to continue their strong seasons.
