The Lions men’s soccer team kicked off their national championships run on Thursday night. They took on the Montreal Carabins at their home field for what would be a devastating loss for the Lions.
The Carabins came out strong and prevented the Lions from scoring any goals while simultaneously scoring two of their own. This allowed the Carabins to knock the Lions out of medal contention.
From here, the Lions moved on to the consolation semi-final round to take on the Calgary Dinos by a narrow margin of 3-2. Merci Yuma scored twice and Milan Beader scored once. Omar Marzuok, Jon Alec Duenas, and Eddie Lay recorded assists on these goals.
Following their first victory at nationals, the Lions played yet another match, this time to battle it out for fifth place. They took on the UBC Thunderbirds on Sunday, where a lone goal by Duenas in the 83rd minute was all that the Lions needed to win.
By winning this match, the Lions placed fifth overall nationally, up a spot from last year’s sixth place finish.
