The York Lions women’s soccer team enjoyed a huge victory Friday night on the road against the Laurier Golden Hawks. The Lions easily took down the Golden Hawks for a final score of 4-0.
The Lions wasted no time getting onto the scoreboard. Fourth-year forward Kiyani Johnson scored her first of many goals at the 13 minute mark. Teammate Jotam Chouhan followed up with a goal of her own 10 minutes later. Another 10 minutes after that, Johnson found the back of the Golden Hawks’ net again with the help of second-year midfielder Vanessa Salvaggio to bring the Lions to a 3-0 lead over the Golden Hawks by the end of the first half.
Despite the Golden Hawks’ defensive efforts in the second half, Johnson was once again able to break through their defence and she scored her third goal of the game. This brought the Lions up to 4-0 for their first win since taking on the McMaster Marauders on September 5.
This greatly-needed win put the Lions up to 2-1-3 for the season. They now sit in a three-way tie for fourth place in the OUA West with McMaster and Brock. Some players for the Lions are now also in the OUA top 10 individual rankings. Johnson is tied for ninth in goals scored, while goalkeeper Danitza Indacochea sits in second for goals against average with a 0.40 average and fifth in goals against, only allowing two in the five games she has played.
The Lions will face off against Guelph, McMaster, and Brock in road games before returning to Alumni Field on Sunday, October 6 at 6 p.m. to take on the Waterloo Warriors.
