The Lions men’s and women’s basketball teams hosted the Algoma Thunderbirds on Friday, and the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday. The women won both their games, defeating Algoma 74-59, and Guelph 77-76.
The men, on the other hand, beat Algoma 85-81, but lost to Guelph 105-92.
Friday’s game was a dominant performance for the women, as they outscored the Thunderbirds in the first three quarters, en route to a 74-59 win.
The men also led the Thunderbirds at half, as they outscored them 18-12 and 20-16 in the first two quarters. However, the Thunderbirds fought back to lead by seven points in the third quarter. The Lions tied the game by the end of the fourth quarter, 71-71, forcing overtime.
In overtime, the Lions outscored the Thunderbirds 14-10, winning the hard-fought game 85-81.
On Saturday, the women started slowly, as they were outscored 13-19 in the first. The Lions bounced back in the next two quarters taking a 61-55 lead by the end of the third. The Gryphons fought back in the last quarter, but fell short by one point, as the Lions finished with a thrilling, 77-76 victory.
The Lions men also started slowly on Saturday, as the Gryphons took a 31-14 lead after one. The Lions improved in the second and third quarters, but still trailed the Gryphons 71-65 going into the fourth.
The Gryphons, however, finished the game strong, outscoring the Lions by seven points in the last quarter, securing a 105-92 victory.
Both teams will be at home this weekend against Waterloo on Friday, and Laurier on Saturday. Tipoff is at 6 p.m. for the women, and 8 p.m. for the men.
