The Lions soccer teams played the Warriors last Friday in Waterloo. The men won their second game in a row, triumphing over the Warriors with a 3-1 victory.
The women, however, were unable to capitalize on a number of scoring opportunities, finishing their game with a final score of 0-0, and ending a three-game winning streak.
The women pressed the Warriors in the first half, and edged them in shots three attempts to two. However, Warriors’ keeper Morgan Berg was up to the task, as she stopped all three.
The second half was an even more defensive affair than the first, as the two teams combined for just three shots, two by the Lions and one by the Warriors. Tamara Orlando, the Lions’ goalkeeper, played brilliantly and recorded her fourth clean sheet of the season.
Lions’ forward Sia Papadopoulos had the most shots on goal in the game with three attempts, while midfielder Jotam Chouhan and forward Stephanie Lamanna had one shot apiece. Neither team was able to gain a decisive edge, ending the game with a 0-0 tie.
The men’s game started with York jumping out to a 1-0 lead less than 12 minutes in, as Cristian Cavallini found the back of the net for the fifth time this season. The Lions maintained their aggressive tempo and were rewarded again late in the half with another goal by Omar Marzouk.
The first half ended with a 2-0 lead for the Lions, who recorded five shots compared to just one by the Warriors.
The second half saw a focused and determined Lions team as they pressed hard and extended their lead to 3-0 in the 68th minute, thanks to another goal by Marzouk, who now has seven goals this season.
However, the Warriors immediately responded courtesy of Nicholas Ribeiro, cutting the lead to 3-1 which became the final score.
This weekend, both teams will have a two-game homestand, as they play host to the McMaster Marauders today. Kick-off is at 6 p.m. for the women and 8:15 p.m. for the men.
Then on Sunday, Brock will be in town looking to avenge their losses from last week. The women will play first at 1 p.m., followed by the men at 3:15 p.m.
