Living in a heteronormative society, we often overlook those who do not fit in the social norm. Same-sex couples, bisexuals, and trans people are often dismissed.
A year ago, I wasn’t aware of the issues that affected the queer and trans community. My most pressing concern was navigating educational hell. Now with both eyes open, I can take a step back and look at the whole picture, seeing and appreciating differences in sexuality and gender present in Toronto. And I’d like to see other people stand where I’m standing now.
What lies on the horizon? This supplement takes you through a journey of answers of what is to come down the road. We will begin by delving back into Pride, and this time visit its darker side, ignoring the pretty floats and activism spirit in favour of discussing its capitalist future. We’ll also explore the potential of a queer Disney, and its power to shape young minds. What would happen if a Disney princess didn’t want a prince in a sequel, but another princess instead?
Nearing the end, we’ll touch close to home with stories about the struggles of coming out, the fragility of familial relationships, and what the future looks like for those out there on the cusp of coming out to loved ones. To brighten your day, we’ll end with the laugh factory: the ridiculousness of stereotyping and every reason in the book to support gay marriage.
As you flip through the following pages, you’ll meet a community more embedded among us than we think. Queers, trans people, and their allies are making waves today in Toronto’s ocean of ignorance. we just have to start acknowledging it.
And at the end of the day, there’s always Nyan Cat.
