Retrospective: Great York University Strikes

The York University Staff Association (YUSA), made up of 1,000 secretarial workers and library technicians, prepares to strike in the fall of 1978; they’re worried about administration contracting out their jobs, as well as the notion new technological advanc- es may make some of their work ‘obsolete.’ They also ask for a 10-percent wage increase, where the university offers four percent.

Galloway incites protest

The brutal wind and the pouring rain did not stop protestors from gathering to rally against a presentation by controversial guest speaker former British MP George Galloway at York Nov. 16.

Examining Ontario’s new disability law

Ontario has joined other provinces in the move toward making its facilities and businesses more accessible for persons with disabilities. In June 2005, the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) became law.

TEDx at York U

The world-renowned TED talks made their way to York Nov. 6 via TEDxYorkU. The theme “Ctrl + Alt + Delete,” all about change, linked seven speakers and two performers, all of them York alumni or students. The presenters educated an intimate audience of 100 with a day of presentations, panel discussions and choice videos pulled from previous TED talks.
