Take a pair, leave a pair

A partnership between a York student club and a local optical store will be giving free eyeglass frames to the first 1,000 York students to walk in.

20/20 Vision Club has made this arrangement—which began September 7, and is still ongoing—with Stylish Eyewear Optical, an off-campus store located at 4205 Keele Street. In exchange for the free frames, students are encouraged to donate an old pair of prescription eyeglasses.

Tariq Cairobe, 20/20 Vision Club’s president, says plans for this year include holding a concert and bringing the Canadian National Institute of the Blind (CNIB) to show a documentary, which will “increase awareness for students to understand how important their vision is and how much stress we put on our eyes.”

Through humanitarian volunteer organization Lions Clubs International—an organization with a history of helping the blind and visually impaired—the used glasses will be given to those in developing countries that cannot afford vision care or eyeglasses.

For every student that donates old glasses, Stylish Eyewear Optical will also give one dollar to the CNIB. The club is hoping to replicate the success of their first event last semester, where they gave free vision screenings to 500 students and received 50 donations of old eyeglasses.

The 20/20 Vision Club will also be accepting donations of used prescription glasses at the Student Centre and SCLD.
