TIFF still committed to CanCon
TIFF’s primary nod to Canadiana this year was its opening night presentation of Michael McGowan’s Score: A Hockey Musical (the title is self-explanatory), whose red carpet guests included Walter Gretzky, Ron MacLean and George Stroumboulopoulos. However, the festival also showcased multiple Canadian short films, as well as some Canadian features. One stand-out was Jonathan Sobol’s debut, A Beginner’s Guide to Endings, a stylish comedy-drama filmed and set in Niagara Falls (on the Canadian side, of course).

Film has a new home in T.O.
This year’s festival included the ribbon-cutting of the TIFF Bell Lightbox, which will be a mainstay of Toronto’s film community long after the festivities end. The new building, located at King St. W. and and John St., will feature a huge variety of special events and guests, screenings of new and classic films and film-related exhibitions in the structure’s gallery space. Currently showing at the Lightbox is “Essential Cinema,” a free exhibition featuring stills and promotional materials from TIFF’s list of 100 essential films from over a century of film history. The exhibition runs until Oct. 24.
