York Lions’ women’s soccer player Nia Fleming-Thompson has been named Excalibur’s athlete of the week. Fleming-Thompson is a third-year biology student with a heart for the game and the brain to make every play count. Fleming-Thompson scored a goal in the 9th minute against the Guelph Gryphons, who were undefeated heading into the game. Fleming-Thompson has been among the top players contributing to York’s unbeaten run.
Fleming-Thompson is York’s top goal scorer with 5 goals, and she is second in the OUA Western division behind Olivia Brown of Guelph with 6 goals. She also is the fourth-highest goal scorer in the whole OUA. In an interview, Fleming-Thompson expresses being grateful to be named Excalibur’s Athlete of the Week: “This honour motivates me to keep striving to become the best version of myself.” Fleming-Thompson also expresses her desire to continue her good form, and talks about how she wants to go about it. “Maintaining my form requires continuous hard work and building healthy habits both on and off the field,” she adds.
However, she also acknowledges the invaluable support from her teammates and fans: “While hard work is essential to being an athlete, the support and encouragement from teammates and fans make the experience truly indescribable. Their belief in me pushes me to achieve even more.” This powerful testament highlights not only Fleming-Thompson’s commitment to the sport, but also the collective spirit that drives her success.
