This week, York’s men’s and women’s basketball teams travelled to Kingston to take on the Queens’ Gaels. The Lions were, however, unable to maintain the momentum from last week’s victories, and lost both of their games by considerable margins.
In the women’s game, the Gaels got a head start, and, midway through the first quarter, held a seven-point lead over the Lions. However, with a collective effort, York made a comeback, and closed the first with a 19-18 lead.
But, the Gaels turned the tide in their favour in the second quarter and never looked back. York’s Katrina Collins-Samuels’ jumper cut the lead to eight just before the half.
The Gaels further outscored the Lions in the third quarter by 10 points, as Queen’s lead by 18 going into the final frame.
York attempted a comeback in the fourth quarter and outscored the Gaels 18-16 courtesy of some lights-out shooting from Collins-Samuels and Haley Bowie. It was, however, too little too late, as the game ended in a disappointing 80-64 loss for the Lions.
Bowie and Samuels led the Lions on the stat sheet with 16 and 15 points respectively.
The men played next, losing to Queens in similar fashion, a crushing 111-71 defeat.
The Lions led the Gaels in the first minutes of the game courtesy of a three from Prince Kamunga. The Gaels, however, quickly tied the game 11-11 and kept adding more points, ending the first with an eight-point lead.
The Gaels further strengthened their grip on the game, and by the end of the first half, led 50-33.
In the third, the Lions were unable to stage a comeback or even halt the Gaels’ offence and trailed by 26 points going into the fourth.
The Gaels sealed the game in the fourth by adding 31 points while holding the Lions to just 17, en route to a 111-71 victory.
Chevon Brown led the Lions in scoring with 19 points followed by Gianmarco Luciani’s 13 points and six rebounds.
Both Lions teams will hope to bounce back this weekend when they host the Carleton Ravens on Friday, and the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday. Tip-off on both days is at 6 p.m. for the women, and and 8 p.m. for the men.
