York Lions lost their first game of the season against McMaster Marauders

The women’s rugby team at York dropped their home opener on Friday against rival McMaster, who finished second in the Shiels division last season.

The Marauders’ defence stifled the Lions’ offence as they managed to keep them off the scoreboard for the entire first-half.

Fourth-year flanker Michela Stratton finally put York on the board with her first try of the season in the second-half, ending Mac’s shutout. Third-year hooker Natasha Naismith converted the kick.

York would add one more try, courtesy of third-year centre back and team-captain, Megan Pakulis. Unfortunately that was all the offence the Lions were able to muster, as they lost by a score of 57-12.

Mac had six different players reach the try zone, including fifth-year seniors Maddy Seatle, Cassidy Calvert and Katie Svoboda, who each recorded a pair. Taylor Price, Sara Svoboda and Maddi Cohoon each recorded one.

The Lions will look to bounce back this Saturday when they play host to the Western Mustangs at Alumni Field. Kick off is at 5 p.m.
