When it comes to eliciting emotions of desire and romance, many songs and movies have an immense power of surging our brains—and hearts—with that feel-good high we can’t seem to get enough of. This Valentine’s Day, the York community shares a few of their favourite love songs, movies, and more!

Ella Mai’s “Naked” is a beautiful song about finding someone who can love you, even when you’re not put-together and at your best. Also, Amber Run’s “I Found” is a hauntingly beautiful song about having feelings for someone, when you don’t know if you should.

One of my favourite guilty pleasures is listening to Celine Dion when I’m in a lovestruck mood, especially her English song “That’s The Way It Is,” which makes me feel hopeful and enchanted in the fact that I know one day, even though I don’t have it now, I will find the true love I want and deserve. Her French song “Pour Que Tu M’aimes Encore” (which translates to “So That You’ll Love Me Again”), is another long-time favourite of mine. While it’s a more somber and poetic track with an even heavier message that can only be understood if you’ve experienced heartbreak, it speaks volumes to the ever-vulnerable longing for love that so many of us hold dear. In a way, it is even melancholic—even though the heartbreak hurts, the music’s soul has an air to it that reminds us that true love still exists, and it always will.

My favourite romantic song is “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran, because I love its poetic lyrics and how it describes the relationship between two lovers.

I’m single, so I’ll be melancholic on Valentine’s Day and sob to ABBA’s “Disillusion,” which is a romantic song, even though it focuses on rejection.

For music, there are so many love songs that are underrated in today’s culture, but Adele’s ballads always give me the feels. As for romantic movies, books, and songs, I’ve never really been a sucker for feel-good romantic stories. Gone With the Wind is my favourite film, which ends with Scarlett on her own.

My favourite thing to do on Valentine’s Day is to invite all my single friends over and watch a funny movie with some good food; I’m not a fan of watching romantic movies.

I’ve never been big on romantic movies, but this Valentine’s Day I’m going to be trying out the new show, The Fosters. Having gay couples in shows is a really cool thing to have.

My favourite romance movies are The Proposal and Pretty Woman, because they both feature strong, funny, and beautiful women. My favourite book has to be Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. It’s an epic adventure-filled romance that I can’t get out of my head! The best part is that there are nine books in the series, and a critically-acclaimed T.V. adaptation. There’s also Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, where the first sentence sucks you right in.

My favourite movies to watch are always scary movies and thrillers, even on Valentine’s Day. I always feel like it’s a good bonding experience, the suspense and jump scares are just enough to divert from any awkwardness, and it always gives you something to talk about after the movie is over. Mostly, it’s fun going to the theatre and watching other people get scared.
