The men’s and women’s hockey teams slid on the ice with a pair of games on Saturday. The men were taking on Windsor in a game that was tightly contested throughout.
Both teams had plenty of chances in the first, as York had 10 shots, while Windsor had nine. Despite the disadvantage, it was Windsor who opened the scoring in the first period, 13 minutes into the frame, courtesy of Eric Palazzolo.
In the second, York continued to pepper the Windsor goalie with shots, as they took another 11 in the frame, but none of them found the mesh. Windsor was unable to add some insurance to their lead, and the teams went into the third with the score still 1-0.
York turned on the pressure in the third, looking for the equalizer. However, Lancers goalie Kris Joyce practically stood on his head, stopping all 16 shots in the period to preserve the win and the shutout.
York’s goalie, Mack Shields, also had a strong performance, stopping 22 of 23 shots.
The Lionesses took on U of T on Saturday. The Varsity Blues opened the scoring just moments into the second when Kristi Riseley beat the Lions goalie.
The U of T goalie, Katie Teekasingh, did a great job preserving the lead, stopping all eight shots from the Lionesses.
York finally got on the board in the third when Chelsea Tucker tied the game on a goal assisted by Caitlin Lee.
The third period was tied and just when it looked like overtime would be needed, U of T beat the York goalie to give the Varsity Blues the lead. They went on to win the game 2-1.
The women had another game on Sunday against UOIT. York got off to a quick start, opening the scoring just two minutes into the game.
UOIT tied the game just two minutes later. Around the halfway point in the period, York added a pair of goals just two minutes apart to take a 3-1 lead.
UOIT opened the scoring in the second to cut the Lionesses’ lead to a single goal. However, York answered with a pair of goals to make the score 5-2. York would add an empty-netter late in the third for a 6-2 lead that would become the final score.
With the win, the Lionesses now have 17 points on the season and are just five points back of eighth-place Brock, who owns the final playoff spot.
The next game for the men is Friday at home, when they take on Queens at 7 p.m., while the women play again on Saturday at home against Windsor. The puck drops at 2 p.m.
