York’s President and Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri has been named a Member of the Order of Canada.
Shoukri’s appointment to the order, along with the appointment of 90 others, was announced on December 30, 2013 by Governor General David Johnston.
Shoukri, who was informed of his appointment a month before it was announced, says it is still a wonderful feeling to be recognized for the work he does and that he is humbled by it.
The Order of Canada, one of Canada’s highest civilian honours, was established by Queen Elizabeth II in 1967. It recognizes a lifetime of dedication to the community and the distinguished contributions one makes in his/her particular group or field.
Shoukri was appointed to the order for his contributions as an engineer, an academic, and an administrator.
Though honoured by this high distinction, Shoukri acknowledges his mentors, supporters, and those under his direction as essential to the work he has achieved, and as the very reason for the recognition he receives.
He thanks the university, calling York “a major contributing factor” in his recent appointment. Shoukri also says this distinction brings attention to the great things happening at the university.
Earlier in 2013, Shoukri received RBC’s Top 25 Canadian Immigrant Award, an Arab Ambassador’s Award, and was appointed the Order of Ontario.
