York student arrested for aggravated sexual assault

In a November 13 news release, Toronto Police alleged that a York student had unprotected sex with a woman without disclosing to her that he was HIV positive.

It’s alleged that the man had sex with the 53-year-old woman—not a York student—between May 2012 and February 2013. The incident is being investigated in the Kingston Road and McCowan Road area.

Detective Constable Amy Handsor of the sex crimes unit in Toronto declined to further elaborate on the details of the case, saying the police are “still investigating at this time.”

Aggravated sexual assault is defined by the criminal code as anyone committing a sexual assault who also wounds, maims, disfigures, or endangers the life of the complainant.

Noël Sturgeon, dean of the Faculty of Environmental Studies, confirmed that this student is part of the faculty of environmental studies.

“My understanding is that the charge against him involves a personal situation entirely outside of the parameters of York University or his work as a student,” says Sturgeon. “We are interested in protecting the privacy of our students.”

York sent out a mass email to its students November 15, urging anyone with further information to contact Detective Constable Amy Handsor at 416-808-4367.

Toronto police urge anyone that may have had sex with this student to seek medical attention, as they believe there may be more victims.
