Construction of the York University Station has been on hiatus for months as a new contractor takes over the second phase of the project. There have been no workers at the site since July.

“I saw no activity and a station full of water,” says Councillor Anthony Perruzza, whose ward will see four of the new stations being constructed as part of the Toronto Yonge-Spadina Subway Extension project.

Construction was stopped when Obrascón Huarte Lain and FCC Construcción, the contractor that dug the hole, handed the project over to EllisDon, which is responsible for building the station.

“I didn’t feel like I got a clear answer, and I’m not sure the TTC folks are real clear on why the contractor that is supposed to build the station is not on site yet,” says Perruzza, who sent a written letter to Andy Byford, CEO of the Toronto Transit Commission, about the delay and made an appearance at the TTC board meeting in October.

“I’m awaiting a written response from them detailing the reasons why,” says Perruzza.

While representatives from the TTC were unavailable for comment, CBC reports EllisDon is currently going through “testing, inspections, and extensive paperwork,” which must be completed before construction begins.

There will be heavy machinery on site this week, according to CBC.

Perruzza says he was told the station, which was already delayed by one year following the death of a construction worker at the site, will still be completed by the projected date of 2016.
