This past Sunday, October 27, Michael Mandel, an Osgoode Hall Law School professor for 39 years and a fierce anti-war activist, passed away from cardiac amyloidosis, a rare heart disease.
Mandel, who died at 65, began teaching at Osgoode soon after he graduated in 1974, but according to his obituary in the Toronto Star, his activism eventually became his main focus.
In his time at York, Mandel estimated that he taught 4,000 students, including Lorne Sossin, current dean of Osgoode. Sossin received his first job teaching law from Mandel as a teaching assistant in his courses.
Mandel was a co-founding member of Lawyers Against War and frequently spoke out against war in the media. His contributions to Canadian law included helping to shape the discussion around the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms in his writing.
Mandel is survived by his wife and five children.
