A petition was started by a York student to pave a popular walkways that connect York and the Village.

The walkways in question connect the Sentinel Road parking lot to Assiniboine Road near Haynes Avenue, and the Pond Road East parking lot to Assiniboine Road near Leitch Avenue.

“The walkway was always a problem because you might either slip and fall from the ice, or get your shoes muddy,” says Brian Cass, a fourth-year design student who started the petition. Cass has lived in the Village for three years.

The current walkways were created as a result of heavy pedestrian traffic between campus and the student housing in the Village. When there is rain or ice, they can be slippery.

Cass says although he’s almost reached his goal of 100 signatures — it currently sits at 98 — he wants to continue to gather support. His first goal was to gage student interest in fixing the problem.

“I haven’t contacted anybody as of yet,” says Cass. “I was first waiting to see if I could garner enough interest in the community first before I taking further action.”

Joanne Rider of York media says the university is aware of the petition and is considering the matter.

“Getting this fixed is important because it is something that many York students use. Even those students who park in the village use this walkway,” says Cass. “I know someone who broke their ankle using the pathway.”
