John Greyson and Tarek Loubani finally arrived home on October 11 after being detained in an Egyptian prison for 51 days.
Both men arrived back in Canada on at 7 p.m. and were surrounded by family and friends, spoke to the media, and expressed their delight at being back home.
Greyson, who read a prepared statement, said he is home because of the work of thousands of people “from all walks of life, from all stripes of the political spectrum.”
He added that because of the shared outraged at their arbitrary arrests and detainments, he and Loubani were freed, and that he was grateful for the hard work supporters did.
Greyson, who is a filmmaker, has pledged to bring awareness to the hundreds of protesters who were arrested on the same day he was, who still remain in prison.
The two were detained in Cairo following a demonstration, during which Loubani treated wounded protesters, while Greyson filmed the unfolding violence. Greyson and Loubani were rounded up with other protesters and imprisoned on August 16. They were then kept without charge until their release last week.
The pair tried to leave Egypt immediately after, but had to wait because their names were on a ‘stop list.’ It wasn’t until this past Friday that they were allowed to leave, boarding a Frankfurt-bound plane in Cairo.
