A male York student was arrested in relation to a sexual assault that occurred on campus during orientation week in Winters Residence.
The incident was reported to residence life staff and Toronto Police on September 30. The male suspect was then quickly taken into custody. Detective Sergeant Al Coulter says the police didn’t publish a press release on the incident because there was no danger to the public, as an arrest was made immediately.
“We only do press releases for situations where there is danger to the public,” says Coulter. “This situation just went further than they expected as the people knew each other, and when we got it, we took action on it right away.”
Joanne Rider of York media says security bulletins are issued about serious occurrences on campus when they will keep the York com- munity informed and safe. The bulletins are also intended to en- courage people to contact Toronto Police if they have any relevant information.
Should students have any information about an incident on campus, they are asked to contact Toronto Police Services directly at (416)808-2222.
