Students with dead cell phones on campus can now make use of free cell phone charging stations provided by the York Federation of Students. The initiative to supply students with phone chargers was taken on by the YFS after several under-graduate students complained about the lack of outlets available on campus. Hamoudi Hneinou, YFS vp operations, says the new charg- ing stations will not only provide access to more outlets, but will also save students the trouble of bringing their own chargers to campus.
As the charging stations are operated by the YFS, they are only available to undergraduate students.
There are currently two fixed charging stations available for students to use. One is located in the second-floor YFS office, the other is in the ground-floor Member Services Office; both of the fixed locations are in the Student Centre. When YFS tables, they will be bringing a portable charging station around campus.
The charging stations are compatible with Blackberry and Samsung phones, as well as the iPhone 4, 4s, and 5.
In order to use the chargers, students must leave their phones at the stations along with their YU cards. When they return to pick up their phones, they must present a government-issued ID.
Since YFS staff will closely monitors the phones, theft is not projected to be an issue.
The charging stations have cost the YFS $643 per unit.
This service is not unique to York students, as Ryerson and University of Toronto also provide the same service for their students.
