Early reports are suggesting a rooftop bonfire was the cause of an afternoon fire in the Village today.

The two-alarm blaze started around 1:30 p.m., at 5 Applebaum Terrace near Keele and Steeles. The building was evacuated safely, with no injuries being reported. Toronto Fire responded to the fire, extinguishing it quickly after it began. Neighbouring houses and apartments had to be evacuated due to smoke damage.

There is a possibility that the fire was caused by a rooftop bonfire from a party the night before, which was not extinguished properly. Toronto fire could not comment on the cause of the fire at the time of the incident.

Three York students, four Seneca students and 1 non-student was effected by the fire. Shelter is being offered at the Bennett Centre for Student Services.

This is the second fire in the village since April 13, when a bedroom appliance caused a fire that forced 16 students out of their home.
