York gets digital

The way York handles digital media is getting a major boost with the hiring of strategist Mark Farmer.

York looks to get digital

Following in the steps of other universities, York is developing a digital media strategy. Mark Farmer was hired as York’s new digital media strategist, and was first introduced at the Board of Govenors on April 22.

Farmer presented a digital media strategy for York, including examples of projects and future developments with the goal of enhancing the university’s reputation. Farmer hopes to enable faculties at York to effectively to get their stories out.

“The strategy entails getting the various faculties and departments at York to communicate better online,” says Farmer.

“That means being able to tap into the positive stories that are being created every day at York: original research, student successes, events, convocation, even fun things like flash mobs.”

Farmer says the strategy will also help the university attract the best students and connect with alumni, as well as reach influencers in the community and build pride in the university. The strategy was developed in consultation with faculties and departments, and research on the digital strategies of other institutions.

Farmer says the university hopes to enhance its reputation, build a deeper connection with alumni and increase the university’s visibility so York can sustain and increase its grants. York also wants to ensure more high school applicants’ select York as a top choice.

“Broadly speaking, if we can excel digitally, we can excel in our communications,” he says.
