Summer enrolment has risen, and it is speculated that York’s recent promotional campaign “This Is My Time” has contributed to the spike.

Summer enrolment has risen, despite fall and winter semester applications taking a hit.

It must be the weather.

Despite decreasing application rates for the fall and winter semesters, Janet Morrison, vice-provost of students, says York has met its summer enrolment target for 2013.  Although the exact number is not yet confirmed, Morrison says the university is currently tracked to exceed its target of 4,683 funding full-time equivalents (FFTE).

One FFTE is the equivalent of five full courses.

“If one student has a course load of three and another student has a course load of two, together they equal one FFTE,” explains Morrison.

She also speculates that a possible reason for the increase in enrolment is York’s recent “This Is My Time” promotion campaign.

“I do think our new branding campaign helped in letting others know about what York has to offer, especially in terms of our diverse courses,” says Morrison.

The campaign, which was launched in September of 2012, was created to promote the university as a viable option for students interested in different careers. The university began promoting its courses to students at other universities, with the intention of attracting students who attend schools outside of Toronto but are home in the city for the summer.

As part of this awareness initiative, the university will be offering courses from different faculties according to student demand.

Although a variety of courses are available during the summer session, according to Morrison, student enrolment is highest in the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies, while summer enrolment in the Faculty of Health continues to grow.
