On September 4, a fire alarm went off at approximately 1:28 p.m. in the Student Center, followed by an evacuation of all four floors of the building.

Scott Jarvis, executive director of the Student Centre, says that while the communication system in the Student Centre was receiving upgrades on the third floor, the workers’ saw, which they were using to cut drywall for the upgrades, got too hot, started smoking, and set off the alarm.

Initially, those inside the Student Center remained seated and ignored the alarm until 1:31 p.m., when they were told by York Security Services to leave the area.

“I was upstairs in the Hellenic Students’ Association office and I heard the alarm, but I didn’t know what it was so we stayed inside, and Scott Jarvis came up and told everyone to leave,” says Despina Ritsakis, a fourth-year kinesiology student. “It was a dinging sound though. They should make the fire alarm another sound so that people actually know it’s an alarm and know to get out of the building.”

The fire department was soon on scene, and the alarm was turned off. No one was hurt.
