Founders residence reopens

Founders residence reopened its doors to students September 1 after having been shut down for the past two years.

Due to an increased demand for on-campus housing, the decision was made to reopen Founders on a short-term basis to accommodate 145 students of the York University English Language Institute, says Joanne Rider of York media.

Before its closing, Founders residence housed mainly first-year students.

Initially built when York’s Keele campus was founded, the residence was closed down because of low occupancy rates and profits.

“The Founders residence was closed two years ago because of lack of demand,” says Rider. “The decision to close the residence was communicated to the York community at the time, with the caveat that it would be opened if and when there was demand for it.”

The demand for on-campus housing is under review by the university administration
to ensure that York can accommodate those who require it, Rider says.
