Streeters : As a student, do you think Toronto is a good place to live?

Compiled by Leslie Armstrong, Mark Grant, and Mike Mannarino

Ross Hammond

third year, theatre

“I’d say it’s a good place to live for a student, largely because of the ease of public transport. It doesn’t require you to have a car, as long as you have a Metropass or a spare few bucks you can get anywhere in the city.”

Charisse Serbanez

first year, french

“I definitely agree, first of all it’s very multicultural. There’s a great night life, there’s a lot of options for school and places to live.”

Kyle McKenzie

fourth year, economics

“I think it depends on where in Toronto you’re living. For us at York, we’re sort of on the tail end of it because of the notable problems being this close geographically to Jane and Finch. I have mixed feelings as a York student on that.”

Jeff Sit

fourth year,communications

“Yeah, Toronto has a great downtown life, we have great schools. It’s a great place to meet people. It’s multicultural, you have different people. You can make a lot of friends here.”

For students, not at all. The public transit is horrible and expensive which makes it difficult for them to get around. There’s not many activities that young people could do for cheap so it is very difficult to vent out the anger and stress that is caused after studying. The best past time you could do is go to a restaurant, which is not really an activity and only a way to spend money. Not only that, it is a very expensive city, and the rooms students get are a tree stump and at a ridiculous price. Employment is horrible so how are they suppose to live if they are unemployed and not able to pay their rent? There are good schools but the instructors and staff don’t care about them so it is very difficult for them to get around and progress in their studies. In general, people in the city don’t care about them, they are just insignificant specks that have false hopes and dreams and only ridiculed because they don’t have a successful career yet.
