The election period has officially begun at York as the chief returning officer (CRO) and two elections appeals officers have been hired.
Cecile Des Vignes, the new CRO, is a former York student and has been a poll clerk in the past. According to YFS executive director Hamid Osman, she was actively involved in campus clubs while she was a student, and worked as a receptionist at the Student Centre.
Osman says the board decided on the new CRO and two election appeals officers at the January 27 board meeting by holding a vote through secret ballot.
The CRO is responsible for hiring and training deputy returning officers and poll clerks, organizing polling stations, approving campaign material, maintaining the voter registration database, and handling candidates’ complaints, among other things.
YFS members had two weeks to apply for the positions, which were advertised in Excalibur and through posters across campus.
Des Vignes will start officially
